The situation, uncovering the challenges
The University of Newcastle is one of Australia’s foremost institutions. Its vision to provide state of the art facilities to its faculty and to its future students. The S.T.E.M building programme is one such initiative to launch the Callaghan Campus into the future. To future proof educational innovations at the Design stage for Callaghan Campus, Transition was engaged to provide comprehensive audit services encompassing 18 Faculty buildings. The team documented and assessed the current arrangements of all spaces and the number of active experiments and works taking place within.
Our solutions
In partnership with the University’s Infrastructure and Facilities Services (‘IFS’) Transition’s data-driven approach, resulted in the accurate capture of information from lab to lab, experiment to experiment, Faculty to Faculty:
- Thermal Test Modules, Robotics Labs, Laser Labs
- Museum Stores
- Cadaver Stores, Dissection Rooms, Animal accommodation
- PC-1 and PC-2 Labs, Chemistry Labs, Instrument Rooms, Prep Spaces, Microscope Rooms, Wet and Dry Labs
- Clinical Labs
We delivered
- Focused stakeholder engagement prioritising the key players and influencers integral to our success — thus creating ‘content conversations’
- Rapid discovery exercise to build sound understanding of the relationships between spaces
- A systematic and timely audit of 380 spaces within 18 buildings across 7 different University Faculties
- Accurate identification and documentation of space layouts, space size, key infrastructure, equipment, tools and machinery, test areas etc.
- A fully realised and user-friendly register containing all data captured from the audit process
The difference we made
- The information gathered during the comprehensive audit played a pivotal role in informing the architectural planning process for the new STEM buildings at the Callaghan Campus
- The detailed documentation of each Faculty’s elements and requirements provided valuable insights for the design team
